British-American film director, producer and screenwriter Christopher Nolan was born on this day in 1970. After making his directorial debut with 'Following' (1998), Nolan gained international recognition for his second film 'Memento' (2000) for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original screenplay.
Moving from independent to studio filmmaking with 'Insomnia' (2002), he has gone on to achieve major critical and commercial success with 'The Dark Knight Trilogy' (2005-2012), 'The Prestige (2006), 'Inception' (2010), 'Interstellar' (2014), 'Dunkirk' (2017), 'Tenet' (2020) and 'Oppenheimer' (2023). Nolan's films have grossed more than $6 billion worldwide and have won 18 Academy Awards from 49 nominations.
In December 2024 it was announced that his next film would be an adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem 'The Odyssey' by Homer with an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal, among others.
