British-American film director, producer and screenwriter Christopher Nolan was born on this day in 1970. After making his directorial debut with 'Following' (1998), Nolan gained international recognition for his second film 'Memento' (2000) for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original screenplay.

Moving from independent to studio filmmaking with 'Insomnia' (2002), he has gone on to achieve major critical and commercial success with 'The Dark Knight Trilogy' (2005-2012), 'The Prestige (2006), 'Inception' (2010), 'Interstellar' (2014), 'Dunkirk' (2017), 'Tenet' (2020) and 'Oppenheimer' (2023). Nolan's films have grossed more than $6 billion worldwide and have won 18 Academy Awards from 49 nominations and with the release of 'The Odyssey' earlier this month, breaking box office records and earning widespread critical acclaim, his stature as one of this century's most accomplished filmmakers continues to grow.
