American actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke was born on this day in 1925. Van Dyke's career began in radio and television before making his film debut as Albert J. Peterson in 'Bye Bye Birdie' (1963), a role he reprised from the successful stage show.

The hugely popular television series 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' (1961-1966) made him a household name across the US. International recognition arrived with starring roles as Bert in 'Mary Poppins' (1984) and Caractacus Potts in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' (1968).
